ONCE A YEAR

GameMaker Studio, GameMaker Language

2016

Team: Kyle Lymber, Zachary Tietje, Sam Arnold

We designed a 2D pixel action-adventure game inspired by Hyperlight Drifter, Darksouls, and Eitr. The game's story is about our character who's sister is plagued and brings forth these poisonous monsters that end up ravaging the local towns. Our character must take a trip once a year to get the cure from this temple and return to his sister to cure her. The normal route our character takes has been blocked so now he must find alternate routes exploring the world around him until he can finally find the cure and help his sister once more.

TO WALK ALONE

At this point we all were improving our skills as game designers, artists, and programmers so we tried experimenting with hand drawn art assets and making a more simple turn based strategy game. The game theme was about drudging through this swamp and trying to find the exit. To Walk Alone is about the player trying to escape this ever-sinking swampland that has been barricaded off from the mainland due to its corrosive nature. Each level will be handcrafted and designed with different enemies and goals in each one. As the player progresses through, they encounter new enemies and environmental hazards such as traps and poison floor tiles .

Our entry for Brackeys, "Love is Blind" themed game jam in February of 2019. The game is about a woman who has to go searching for her missing husband. As the player searches, they find mementos that remind the woman of her husband, and her hope of finding him increases through the game. (Disclaimer) This game was in development for a very short time since it was a game jam entry. Into the Wolf Den was designed, hand-drawn, and programmed within a single week by a team of two.

I wanted to learn more about Unity, C# development, and I had an interest in RPGs. This game is a work in progress, so there are a lot of systems finished and unfinished as of right now. My goal was to learn Unity and build a simple small RPG, however, once I started making some progress my friends Dan Schmitt and Brian Taylor joined the project to try and make something more out of it. About a month later we had a pretty cool pirate-themed RPG with combat, level system, sailing, and unique loot drops. The art was from Unity's asset store and allowed us to easily build more complex systems including character customization and multiplayer hosting in a quick time frame.
